Notice: 10-digit dialing for local calls in NS and PEI

Written by Executive Director on . Posted in Business News, Community News

Introduction of 10-digit dialing for local calls in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island

Starting August 23, 2014, residents of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island will be required to dial 10 digits – the area code followed by the seven-digit phone number – for all local calls. The introduction of 10-digit dialing is the result of a decision by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) and will pave the way for the addition of a new area code, 782, in November 2014, as the 902 area code reaches capacity.

To accommodate 10-digit dialing, various telephone functions and communications equipment will need to be reprogrammed to add the 902 area code to numbers stored in autodialing devices. Reprogramming can start now, since telephone service providers are all currently able to accommodate 10-digit local dialing. All adjustments should be completed before 10-digit local dialing comes into effect on August 23, 2014.

The Telecommunications Alliance – whose members include Bell Aliant, Bell, Rogers and Telus – was formed to spearhead a public information campaign to ensure a seamless transition to this new local dialing method.

For more information on how to get prepared, please consult the information document available on the Telecommunications Alliance website at www.dial10.ca.

Press Release Announcing Liverpool to host the 2013 Provincial Music Festival

Liverpool: Events Liverpool*, the 2013 Provincial Host Committee and The Federation of Music Festivals of Nova Scotia are pleased to announce the 2013 Provincial Music Festival will be held this year in Liverpool from May 31st- June 1st.

The Provincial Music Festival features the top competitors in a wide variety of disciplines from Nova Scotia’s eight local music festivals. This year’s provincial festival will see competitors in Musical Theatre, Voice, Piano, Strings, Brass, Woodwind, Guitar and Chamber. There are Choral competitions too, but these are adjudicated separately and the results announced during the festival.

“Liverpool embraces Queens County’s own Music Festival, held every spring,” says Gerry Punke, President of the Federation of Music Festivals of Nova Scotia. “Bringing the Provincial Festival to a community with such a rich heritage of arts and culture is a wonderful opportunity for both the competitors and the local community.”

Events Liverpool committee member, Amanda Wamboldt says the committee is delighted Liverpool has been chosen to host the Provincial Music Festival. “We’ll be working with Co-chairs, Kris Snarby and Pamela Rogers, and members of the Host Committee to make this a memorable visit for participants and their families,” says Wamboldt.

The festival culminates in a Gala and Awards Concert held at the Astor Theatre on Saturday evening, June 1, showcasing performances by all winning competitors. In addition, Nova Scotia’s team to compete at the National Competitions, Sir Wilfred Laurier University, Waterloo, Ontario, August 6 – 10, will be chosen from among the competing Senior finalists.

All competitions and the final concert are open to the public. For more information, contact Kris Snarby, 646-1718.

Mariner’s Day Act to Commemorate Nova Scotia Fishermen

Written by Executive Director on . Posted in Community News, Local Interest

Press Release from NS Fisheries and Aquaculture

FISHERIES/AQUACULTURE–Mariner’s Day Act to Commemorate Nova Scotia Fishermen
—————————————————————–
The work and sacrifices of Nova Scotians who make a living at sea will be
commemorated annually as the province sets aside a special day to honour
them.

Each year, the second Sunday in August will be known as Mariner’s Day in
Nova Scotia.

While speaking at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, Fisheries and
Aquaculture Minister Sterling Belliveau announced today, April 29, that he
is introducing legislation to create the Mariner’s Day Act.

“The recent tragic loss of five young men aboard the Miss Ally serves as a
reminder of the dangers fishers face while supporting their families and
communities,” said Mr. Belliveau.

“Mariner’s Day will pay tribute to all men and women who contributed so
much to the economic prosperity of this province and who lost their lives
in the process. It will give Nova Scotians, from Yarmouth to Cape North, a
chance to say thank you to fishers who currently make their living on the
water.”

Mariner’s Day will also help promote safety practices within the fishing
industry, said Mr. Belliveau.

“There is no denying the danger associated with fishing for a living, but
we can enhance awareness of safety within the fishing industry. Families
can play a big role in encouraging their loved ones to take greater
precautions while at sea, ensuring that a crew will return home without
suffering an injury or something worse.”

The province is working with agencies and associations to promote safety
within the fishing industry and to help prevent future fatalities.

“Working in the northern Atlantic, especially during the winter months,
comes with inherent risks,” said Stewart Franck, executive director of the
Fisheries Safety Association. “I hope Mariner’s Day will prompt change and
is taken by the fishing industry as a call to action to implement
improvements to prevent all drowning and loss at sea.”

Phoebe Malone of Yarmouth County started a petition in memory of the five
young men aboard the Miss Ally, which went down in February.

“It seems fitting to me that Nova Scotia should have an official day to
honour the mariners already lost and to show support for the fishermen and
women who earn their living on the sea, as well as their families. All
fishermen and mariners across Nova Scotia deserve this.”
